Tiruvarur: DMK president M.Karunanidhi was well known for his presence of mind and punning words during public meetings.

He was at his best here during his election campaign on Friday night.

Mr. Karunanidhi, who arrived at 9 p.m. to the meeting venue, said he could reach Tiruvarur only at this time because of the welcome accorded to him at various places from Buvanagiri to Tiruvarur. Though his plan was to reach Kumbakonam and address a meeting before 10 p.m., his campaign vehicle was stopped at Tiruvarur like `muttukattai' (a brake) applied to temple car. (Therukku muttukattai poduvathupol.)

As `muttukattai' was put only to regulate the temple car and not to stop it, his campaign was only regulated. "Instead of going to Kumbakonam and waving hands to the crowd without speaking a word as the time will be 10 p.m. when he can reach there, he would like to speak elaborately here," he said and spoke for an hour.

He said that he had seen a slogan written by his rivals "Suriyanaiye sudum neruppu" (fire that will burn sun itself).

"How can fire engulf sun? A story tells that Lord Hanuman tried to swallow sun but only burnt himself," he added.
