He was shot at while steering a mechanised boat
A fisherman from Karaikal sustained a bullet injury on his back in an alleged firing by Sri Lankan Naval personnel, about 11 nautical miles southeast off Kodiakarai , in the early hours of Thursday.
Shenbagam (40) of Kilinjamedu was shot at while steering one of the two mechanised boats carrying a group of fishermen who ventured out into the sea last Saturday. Others had escaped from the gunshots.
The Sri Lankan Navy personnel were also said to have destroyed the fishing nets and damaged the boats, according to a complaint preferred by the fishermen with the Vedaranyam Marine Police.
On reaching the shore, an unconscious Shenbagam was given first aid and taken to Vedaranyam Government Hospital. He was later referred to the Nagapattinam Government Hospital.
In another incident, Sri Lankan Navy personnel allegedly attacked four fishermen of Jegadapattinam in Pudukkottai district and rendered their mechanised boat immobile by dumping sugar in the diesel tank. According to the injured fishermen Kishore, Kuppusamy, Veeramani and Pandi, the naval personnel had confiscated their catch and destroyed their fishing nets. The engines of a few other boats were also damaged by the naval personnel. Responding to phone calls they had made from deep sea, another group of fishermen rescued them, according to reports reaching the Marine police in Pudukottai district.
