ERODE: Jute Service Centre, Coimbatore, brought in jute product manufacturers at an exhibition here to invite buyers.
Officer-in-charge of the Centre M. Ramasamy says buyers from regions in and around Erode district and Kumbakonam and also other parts of the State participated in the buyer-seller meet.
The manufacturers showcased jute bags, folders, water bottle carriers, big shoppers, mats, etc., he says and adds that a few of them managed to secure orders.
He says the meet is part of the Centre’s efforts to promote jute products. The other measure includes training in manufacturing jute products for both members of self-help groups and individual entrepreneurs.
In the past year alone the Centre has trained 294 persons, about 80 per cent of which are representatives of SHGs, he says.
Aside from training, the Centre also sells jute raw materials and accessories. The Centre ensures that manufacturers need not be dependent on Kolkata for buying raw materials and accessories by selling the materials needed at the raw material bank.
Mr. Ramasamy also says that the Centre has helped trainees by arranging for bank loans to start a jute manufacturing unit.
The sellers at the Erode exhibition managed to procure orders worth about Rs. 5 lakh.
