Judges of the Madras High Court Bench here kept a promise made by them during the Republic Day celebrations on Saturday to donate a brand new van for the transport needs of a home for the mentally challenged at Thirumogur near here and handed over the vehicle to the administrators of the home, run by M.S. Chellamuthu Trust, on Thursday.

Justices K. N. Basha, M. Jaichandren, T. Sudanthiram, S. Nagamuthu and P. Devadass gave a new vehicle costing Rs.3.1 lakh to the home in the presence of psychiatrist C. Rama Subramanian, founder of the trust and also the State Nodal Officer of the National Mental Health Programme implemented by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

Mr. Justice Basha thanked the lawyers who donated huge amounts following a call given by him on the Republic Day and ensured that the vehicle was delivered to the beneficiaries within four days.

The excess amount of donations was utilised for purchasing a photocopier for Anbagam, another home for the mentally challenged in the city and 162 sweaters for inmates of a home housing those afflicted with leprosy.
