The Madras High Court has directed the Principal District Judge, Tiruvallur, to enquire into the alleged illegal detention of a person, torture and injuries inflicted on him by police. The district judge should submit a report within eight weeks.

Justice N. Paul Vasanthakumar was passing further orders on a writ petition by one G. Arun of Sholavaram. He alleged that in June this year, police barged into his house and assaulted his mother. He was taken in a police van and handcuffed.

Pursuant to a High Court order in July this year, the petitioner was given treatment and a medical report was submitted by a doctor of the Government Royapettah Hospital here. The Superintendent of Police, Tiruvallur district, filed a counter stating that Arun was involved in several cases.

The petitioner was not ill-treated by police.

Mr. Justice Paul Vasanthakumar said as there was an allegation of custodial violence and Arun sustained injuries while in custody, he was of the view that it would be just and proper to order for a judicial enquiry into the alleged torture.
