Combined effort among officers is vital: Official

: A joint and combined effort among the district level and block level officers to make the Tamil Nadu State Rural Livelihoods Mission (TNSRLM) a grand success was stressed by Managing Director, Tamil Nadu Corporation for Development of Women, P Amudha on Thursday.

Addressing a one-day orientation programme on “Reaching vision 2023, though TNSRLM” at the Collectorate here, she said unlike other programmes, TNSRLM seeks to adopt a comprehensive approach towards poverty alleviation by reaching to the targeted families. This could be achieved only through a combined effort by all departments. Ms. Amudha dwelt in detail as why is somebody is poor, why many programmes have not been able to eradicate poverty and whether eradication of poverty is possible at all. Till 1984, poverty level in the state was more than the national average of 44 per cent. However, during 2004-05, when the national average stood at 27.5, Tamil Nadu was below the national average with 22.8 per cent.

Ramanathapuram district was far behind compared to other districts in the female literacy (74.93 per cent), adult sex ratio (997 per 1,000) and juvenile sex ratio (967 per 1,000), she said and described the situation “not healthy.”

R.V. Shajeevana, Additional Project Director, Pudhu Vazhvu Project, said the project aimed at empowerment and poverty alleviation. The World Bank assisted project targets poor households and the most vulnerable sections, including the differently abled and the marginalized communities. Explaining the CDD approach, she said the village communities identify their own needs under the project. They design, plan and implement the schemes, she explained.

Collector K Nanthakumar inaugurated the orientation, which was attended by district level, block level officials and bank officers.
