Forty-eight sovereigns of jewellery and silver items were allegedly stolen from a house in Ramalingapuram, Ayanavaram, on Friday night. On Saturday morning, residents of the house claimed that the jewellery was intact.

Sources with the Secretariat Colony police said the incident occurred at the house on Trust Square Street of Ramakrishnan (65), a retired bank employee, and his wife Shamala (61), a former employee of the Directorate of Public Instructions (DPI).

On Friday night, the couple found the iron grill on the first floor of their house broken and the almirahs inside a room ransacked. They alerted the police and reported that 48 sovereigns of jewellery and four kg of silver items were missing, police sources said.

A police team conducted preliminary investigations and fingerprint experts visited the crime spot.

“On Saturday, the victims informed us that they thought that the 48 sovereigns were missing.

They found the gold jewellery between saris in the house.

However, a burglary had taken place and the culprits had fled with three kg of silverware from the house,” said G. Sankaralingam, Assistant Commissioner of Police (Ayanavaram).

A case of burglary has been registered by the Secretariat Colony police.
