TIRUCHI: Jewellery shops in the city and elsewhere in the district remained closed for the day on Monday as the members of the Tamil Nadu Viswakarma Kaivignaignargal Sangam, Tiruchi district, the District Jewellers Association and Artificial Diamond Merchants Association observed a day-long fast at Chinthamani in the city demanding the Centre and the State governments to ban online trading.

The fast was led by the Viswakarma Kaivignaignargal Sangam district president P. Natarajan. While condemning the sharp rise of iron owing to online trading, they demanded the government to check the rising prices of construction materials and essential commodities.

They wanted the people of Viswakarma community to be included in the most backward class category besides demanding the Centre to set up a welfare board for improving the lot of the traditional ‘Kaivignaignargal’.
