Members of Jewellers' Association of Kanyakumari district downed their shutters on Saturday in protest against increase in customs duty from two per cent to four per cent for gold bars. As many as 1,500 jewellery shops in Nagercoil, Marthandam, and Kollencode participated in the three-day strike called by the All India Jewellers Association, said association treasurer S. Gopalakrishnan.

Though most of the smaller shops involved in bullion trade here transacted business as usual, four major showrooms downed shutters to register their protest to the Union Budget proposal.
