Wants Centre to take steps to stop human rights violation

CHENNAI: All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary Jayalalithaa on Tuesday warned that her party, along with like-minded political parties, will be forced to launch a mass agitation to focus world vision on civil liberties violations in Sri Lanka if the Centre failed to take steps to stop the human rights violations against the Tamils.

In a statement here, Ms. Jayalalithaa said the AIADMK and millions of Tamils scattered across the globe “expect India to raise the human rights issue of the Tamils in international forums and to impress upon the comity of nations to bring pressure on the Sri Lankan government to treat its own people with dignity or face the consequences.”

She said the visuals on television channels in India and abroad of clips claiming to show the execution of Tamils by Sri Lankan militiamen were most disturbing.

“The AIADMK has never been a votary of terrorism or terrorist outfits. I have personally been a very vocal critic of the LTTE [Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam], ever since that outfit degenerated from being valiant fighters for the liberation of Tamils to a terrorist organisation that annihilated political opponents, murdered anyone who did not toe their line and heaped suffering on the Tamil people whose cause they were claiming to espouse.”

“Even assuming that the persons being shot dead in the footage telecast were LTTE activists, executing them summarily without a trial is barbaric, inhuman and contrary to civilised norms. It also violates international law relating to treatment of prisoners of war,” she said.
