COIMBATORE: Information Technology (IT) sector here can focus on catering to the needs of the manufacturing sector as Coimbatore has a strong manufacturing base, according to vice-president of Cognizant Technology Solutions R. Ramkumar.
He told The Hindu that Coimbatore should strengthen its association with a certain industry or a service line.
With its inherent capabilities in the manufacturing space, it could position itself as one of the best global providers of IT services and solutions to this sector.
Emerging locations such as Coimbatore had the potential to develop as delivery centres catering to the Indian domestic market. The Tamil Nadu Government had taken the benefits of the IT sector to the tier-two locations by setting up Tidel Parks in some of the key cities.
The Government sector was likely to be the biggest spender on IT in the coming years. Using this as an opportunity, the Government should make it mandatory that a certain proportion of all e-governance projects should be awarded to vendors to be executed from a tier-two location.
Thus, the Government could be the anchor customer in each tier-two location and help incubate and nurture the eco-system for growth in these regions.
According to R. Mahalingam of Netcon Technologies India Private Limited, Coimbatore had 100 to 150 IT companies. And, most of them were into IT services. There was a market to be tapped in the small and medium-scale segment. Some of the larger companies were already developing products for this segment.
The IT companies here could come out with models for the SME segment and drive it through the industrial associations.
