A search and seizure operations conducted by the investigation wing of Directorate General of the Income Tax, Chennai, on Thursday and Friday at three fertility centres in different parts of the State resulted in seizure of unaccounted cash of Rs.5.05 crore and gold and diamond jewellery valued at Rs.48 lakh.

A press release issued by S. Suresh Kumar, Joint Director of Income Tax, on Monday said that more than 150 officials in three groups carried out operations on the residential premises and hospitals of a group of doctors engaged in the specialty treatment called ‘Assisted Reproduction' for childless couples with facility for surrogate mothers in Chennai, Palani, Coimbatore and Madurai.

According to sources, the operation was headed by V. Nanda Kumar, Deputy Director of Income Tax and J.X. Peter, Assistant Director of Income Tax and Sundaresan, Assistant Director of Income Tax (Madurai).

It led to seizure of incriminating documents showing suppression of receipts to the extent of Rs.54.50 crore from two set of doctors.
