“500 towers to be commissioned by March”
Cellular mobile services of Tamil Nadu Circle of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) have been awarded ISO 9001:2008 certificate.
BSNL's Chief General Manager, Tamil Nadu Circle, Mohammed Ashraf Khan, received the certificate from the Group Director, P. Mathialagan, of Electronics Test and Development Centre, here on Thursday.
Tamil Nadu was the second circle in the southern region to get the prestigious certificate, Mr. Khan said. It was an international recognition of the quality of mobile phone service, grievance redressal mechanism, and minimal breakdown time of mobile towers, he added.
Tamil Nadu BSNL had 65 lakh working mobile connections in 31 districts with 1,500 towers. “The certification process included training for the staff, bringing about behavioural changes in them, formation of special teams, and provision of vehicles,” he said.
A total of 500 new towers would be commissioned by March this year increasing the capacity by another 10 lakh, he added. Mobile number portability facility had not made much impact on the BSNL's subscriber base.
