DHARMAPURI: Film director R.K. Selvamani urged the youths to take active role in prevention of road accidents. Participating in a seminar on ‘The role of youths in prevention of accidents’ organised by the district police in Dharmapuri on Tuesday, he said statistic shows that as many as 15,000 people die every year in accidents.
Though there are many reasons other than human error, irresponsible driving cost many lives in our country.
The highest number of accidents is occurring in India in the world. Within the nation, the highest number of accidents recorded is in Tamil Nadu.
It is pathetic to note that even those who are walking on the road become victim of the road accidents. The need of the hour is to create awareness about the road safety to the masses, urged Mr. Selvamani.
In his address R. Sudhakar, Superintendent of Police, said the loss of lives in accidents were the biggest impediment for our burgeoning economy.
During the last 11 months in Dharmapuri district alone 285 people lost their lives in 267 accidents.
According to statistics, most of the accidents occurred due to drunken driving. He appealed the youth to avoid drunken driving. It is in the hands of the youths to prevent accidents or reduce the number of accidents through creating various awareness programmes, he added.P.
