Over 2,000 eco-friendly bags distributed
Udhagamandalam: “Please help combat the plastic menace and protect the environment of the Nilgiris,” is the message of the campaign launched by the Indian Overseas Bank (IOB) among the thousands of tourists who flocked to the 113th annual flower show at the Government Botanical Garden here on Sunday.
Speaking to The Hindu, Executive Director of the bank G.Narayanan regretted that though it was common knowledge that the Nilgiris was a plastic-free district and boards to this effect were ubiquitous, many tourists seem to be showing scant respect to the rules.
In order to make an impact on at least some of them the bank had taken the initiative. As part of the campaign over 2,000 eco-friendly bags were distributed.
He added that the bank was also against extending financial assistance to environmentally hazardous projects.
He said that such campaigns would be conducted regularly.
It was inaugurated by Udhagamandalam MLA B.Gopalan. Chief Regional Manager, IOB, S.Palanisamy took part. Distribution of loans worth Rs. 50 lakh to a couple of farmers marked the occasion.
