Six members of an inter-State gang, including three women, have been arrested near Ammapet on Sunday in connection with a series of robberies reported in Gobichettipalayam and Sathyamangalam blocks of Erode district, Coimbatore, Tirupur and Salem districts.

A special team, which was formed to nab the robbers, patrolling near Ammapet intercepted the van carrying the gang. The accused were all residents of Mandya district in Karnataka.

Police said the gang had stolen a five-sovereign gold chain from Kaliyammal 65), an aged woman living in Punjai Puliyampatti on Saturday. On the same day afternoon, members of the gang stole a five-and-half-sovereign gold chain from Palaniammal (65) at Kallipatti near Gobichettipalayam.

The modus operandi of the gang was to follow women who were alone, befriend them and convince them to come with them.

Later the gang would spray a chemical substance rendering them unconscious and decamp with the jewels, police said.
