Udhagamandalam: With a call to men and women to join hands to combat crime against women and children, international women’s day was celebrated here on Tuesday under the aegis of the World Vision, India.

With members of the judiciary and human rights activists joining the celebrations, participants from various parts of the district resolved to oppose discrimination against women.

They also took a pledge to educate girls and fight early marriage. They participated enthusiastically in various competitions including rangoli which were organised to promote unity. With speakers listing the rights of women and explaining how problems can be avoided, the Coordinator, World Vision K. Vetriselvan said that since Friday such programmes were being organised in different parts of the district including Pazhathottam, Kollacombai and Kotagiri. The objective was to make at least 5000 women participate in the celebrations.

The curtain would be brought down here on March 27.
