To be held between November 28 and 30
: The Department of Advanced Zoology and Biotechnology of St. Xavier's College, Palayamkottai, has proposed to conduct the third biennial international conference on ‘bio-pesticides' between November 28 and 30 on the college premises. A good number of scientists from nine countries including the United States of America and Germany is expected to participate.
Speaking to reporters here on Friday, Principal Rev. Fr. Alphonse Manickam SJ said the conference planned by the Crop Protection Research Centre of the department received 283 abstracts of which 223 would be presented during the meet.
Fifteen scientists from nine countries, including the USA, Germany, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Iran, Taiwan, Bangladesh, Peru, Nigeria, Egypt and Saudi Arabia, research scholars, entrepreneurs and students would participate and present research papers.
Vice-Chancellor of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, which is one of the major sponsors of the event, P. Murugesa Boopathi, would preside over the conference which would be inaugurated by G.J. Samathanam, Advisor and Head, Technology Department and Transfer, Department of Science and Technology, Government of India.
“A total of 56 papers will be presented on microbial insecticides, which avoid the harmful side effects of chemical insecticides when they are used in farms. Another 75 papers will be concentrating on ‘Eco-friendly pest management' will 40 research papers will deal with ‘Role of biotechnology in pest management'. Since leading scientists from all over the world will be sharing their experiences on bio-pesticides, the three-day event will be a great opportunity for the students here,” said Rev. Dr. Alphonse Manickam.
He said the Peer Team of National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) would soon visit the college.
Convener of the conference, K. Sahayaraj and Head, Department of Zoology, SXC, T.A. Sethuramalingam, were present.
