Near Fisheries College and Research Institute

: An integrated bus station is likely to come up at a place near Fisheries College and Research Institute. Detailed project report is getting ready for establishing the facility, according to Collector Ashish Kumar.

Three localities in the city had been identified to set up the new bus station to ease traffic congestion in Tuticorin central, he said here on Monday.

While speaking to reporters after his schedule of grievances redressal meeting, he said the existing old bus station would also be expanded. To further ease traffic congestion, roads connecting both old and new bus stations would be widened.

In the first phase, road expansion from Pudurpandiapuram to new bus station would be taken up.

As for second phase, the road from FCI godown to old bus station would be taken for expansion.

Survey is on with authorities concerned.

He also said that plastic or polythene bags with forty microns and above could be permitted but the bags should be printed with details of manufacturers and microns used in it.

The officials were stepping up vigil to prevent usage of plastic bags. Its usage has been reduced gradually among the public.

Penalty would be imposed against those who use the banned bags from April 1 onwards.

Awareness is being generated and further camps involving students of educational institutions, members of self-help groups and representatives of non government organisations would be organised in all blocks across the district soon.

The campaigners would also disseminate information on alternative use of polythene bags, he added.

Earlier, six beneficiaries were provided with Rs.58, 500 under Farmers Protection Scheme. S. Amirtha Jothi, District Revenue Officer, and other officials were present.
