An injured peacock was operated upon at the Coimbatore Corporation Zoo in VOC Park on Thursday.
The peacock that was flying out of the jail grounds hit the windscreen of a bus and suffered a fracture in its right wings. It was rescued and brought to the zoo.
Zoo Director and veterinarian K. Asokan operated upon the peacock and placed a stick to replace the damaged bone. The peacock is under treatment and will be under observation for a week.
If the surgical process failed to regain the flying ability for the bird, the right wings would have to be removed, Dr.Asokan said.
The zoo at present has 15 peacocks and the operated peacock becomes the 16th one. So far, ten surgeries had been performed at the zoo on such injured animals rescued from various places and also on ailing animals and reptiles at the zoo. Three surgeries were performed on eagles, two on snakes and one on a crocodile which had its jaws torn while fighting with fellow crocodiles for its share of meat.
