MADURAI: Power cuts beyond the scheduled load shedding hours was taking a toll on industrial production leading to increase in prices of goods,” said E. V. K. S. Sulochana Sampath, All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) leader, here on Monday.

Addressing a demonstration staged by the party, she said that the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) government had failed on the law and order front and in checking price rise despite ruling the State and sharing power at the Centre.

Stating that the DMK supported the Centre while prices of cooking gas and petrol were increased, she said that it failed to get necessary quantum of power from the Central government to make up for the electricity shortage in the State. Weavers, patients in hospitals and students preparing for examinations had been suffering owing to power cuts since the Electricity Minister had failed to give the issue due attention.

Party’s urban district secretary K. Raju assailed the city police for arresting six party councillors who, he said, protested in a democratic way.

Cadres raised slogans and carried placards against power cuts. Party functionaries V.V. Rajan Chellappa, M.S. Pandiyan, K. David Annadurai and R. B. Udhayakumar were among those who participated in the demonstration.
