C.S. Balajee of PSG College of Technology, Coimbatore, won the first prize at the South India Textile Design Competition held here on Wednesday by the Society of Dyers and Colourists, Textiles Committee and Avinashilingam University. The second and third prize winners are Chitra Jose of Avinashilingam University and Tulika Joshi of Pearl Academy of Fashion respectively. The winners will participate in the national-level competition.


The South India Textile Research Association will offer job-oriented weaver training for three months in “shuttleless weaving machines” under the Youth Skill Training Scheme (Mahalir Thittam) for 2008-2009.

Candidates who have studied at least up to Class VI and are aged below 35 can apply.

The association will select 56 candidates and the training will be held from March 23 to June 22. The trainees will get Rs. 625 a month as stipend during the training period. An interview will be held at the association campus in Coimbatore, Palladam and Somanur on March 20 and 21 to select candidates for the programme.

Applicants should take the school transfer certificate, ration card and two passport size photos for the interview.
