The Tamil Nadu Senior Citizens and Pensioners Welfare Association urged the State government to increase the old age pension provided to senior citizens to Rs.3,000 per month, taking into consideration the present day cost of living.
A resolution to this effect was adopted at the central executive committee meeting of the Association held here on Sunday.
Siva Somanathan, state president of the association, presided over the meeting.
Another resolution urged the government to implement the Parental Act 2007, ensuring proper care and maintenance of the aged parents by their wards, strictly implemented in letter and spirit.
The government should also issue proper guidelines in this regard to the District Collectors.
The meeting pleaded for proper medical facilities and separate wards for the senior citizens and pensioners at the government hospitals, provision of scan facilities in all the hospitals.
The meeting also demanded a ban on private practice by government doctors.
The government should take steps for setting up Directorate of Senior Citizens, another resolution said. N. Amjath Ibrahim, state joint secretary of the Association, K.S.Arumugam, treasurer, and Gomathi Nayagam, vice president, spoke.
