COIMBATORE: A section of the employees of the Department of Income Tax began a relay fast here on Monday alleging that some Group C and Group D staff members had been transferred without any reason.
Five employees were on a fast on Monday. Five others would take over from them on Tuesday and this would continue till their demands on the transfers were met, the protesting employees said.
They have launched the protest under the banner of the Joint Council of Action of Income Tax Gazetted Officers' Association (Tamil Nadu and Puducherry Unit) and Income Tax Employees' Federation, Tamil Nadu Circle.
The employees also staged a demonstration during lunch hour. A similar fast was on in Chennai, they said.
The council said in a statement that as per guidelines some categories of staff members could not be transferred on a permanent basis. If the guidelines were to be modified, the local employees' associations should be consulted, the statement contended.
In two rounds of discussions with the federation, it had been decided that only request transfers would be made.
This decision was followed in the transfers of Group D officials, Staff Car Drivers, Notice Services, Stenographers and Office Superintendents and orders were issued from March 31 to April 10, this year.
The federation was asked for its views on the transfers of Tax Assistants, Senior Assistants and Inspectors and it had stated in writing that the guidelines should not be violated.
The statement alleged that transfer orders were issued on April 23 against the guidelines.
