Owing to inclement weather and festival season, a majority of fishermen in Cuddalore district did not go for fishing on Wednesday and Thursday.

A large number of trawlers and motorised boats were berthed at the fishing harbour in the Cuddalore Old Town area. K.Sakthivel, a fisherman, told The Hindu that fishermen would generally stay with their families on the Deepavali day to perform rites for departed souls.

However, this year, the weather condition was also not conducive to fishing.

For want of arrivals, prices of fish in the markets went up by 20 to 30 per cent and several premium fish varieties went scarce.
