The improper implementation of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Prevention of Atrocities Act, 1989 in the State is the reason behind the Dharmapuri anti-Dalit violence, said, A. Marx, writer and state convenor, People’s Union for Democratic Rights.

Delivering the special address at a book release event where the fact finding report on the violence by a team of human rights activists was published in the form of a small booklet here on Wednesday, Mr. Marx said that the property loss was more that Rs.10 crore and the loss should be immediately compensated by the government.

Thanthai Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam’s president Kovai Ramakrishnan released the first copy which was received by John Moses, state general secretary Janata Dal (Secular).

Mr. John Moses in his speech said that his party will follow Kamaraj’s ideals and support Dalits. He demanded that the Vanniar Sangam leader Kaduvetti J. Guru should be booked under SC/ST P Act, 1989.

Speaking on the occasion, Advocate Rajni, People’s Union for Human Rights, said that the Dharmapuri violence has pushed back the Dalit renaissance that took place following B. R. Ambedkar’s centenary in the 1990s . The violent incident that took place is against woman’s autonomy to choose her life and life partner and it is indeed a violence against women’s dignity, she added.

Condemning the violence against Dalits, Mr. Ramakrishnan said that their organisation will continue fighting for the rights of the Dalits. Sugumaran of Federation of People’s Rights, Puducherry, in his speech said that the ‘Ambedkar Sudar’ award given to Dr. Ramadoss by the VCK should be taken back. The booklet was published by Dalit Thozhamai Maiyam (Centre for Dalit Comradeship), Madurai and is priced at Rs.5.
