SALEM: The Peoples Collective, a non-governmental organisation, has started a movement Ilanthalir Vasippu Iyakkam to promote reading habit and impart social and life skill education to the children.

A total of 100 reading centres would be opened in 50 panchayats in Salem, Namakkal, Erode and Karur districts as a part of the movement, a press release said.

Instead of forcing the children to study, the movement would encourage them to come to the reading centres voluntarily and seek knowledge. A variety of programmes would be conducted through the centres to help children acquire social and life skills. The movement was also aimed to making children aware of their rights.

The release further said that imparting social and life skill education to the children would help create violence-free society. As a part of the initiative, the NGO conducted a three-day children’s camp at Ammapet here from September 27 to 29 recently. Mayor J. Rekha Priyadarshini inaugurated the movement. People’s Union for Civil Liberties State General Secretary S. Balamurugan delivered the inaugural address. Peoples Collective Salem unit in-charge C. Ramu spoke.
