The State government has ordered the closure of all Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) shops run by the Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation (Tasmac), the bars attached to them, bars in hotels and other private liquor bars on April 24 and May 1, in view of Mahaveer Jayanthi and May Day respectively.

The government has issued the order under rule 12 of the Tamil Nadu Liquor Retail Vending (in shops and bars) Rules, 2003.

Vellore Collector P. Sankar has said in a release that in pursuance to the above order, all IMFL retail shops of Tasmac, the bars attached to them, and the private liquor bars in Vellore district should be kept closed on the said days.

Action, including suspension and cancellation of the licences of the shops and bars, would be taken in case of violation of the rules.
