Eight goats were killed after they were struck by lightning at Ettivayala in Sathirakudi police limits on Monday.

The goats, including seven of them, which had delivered kids recently, were standing under a Peepal tree when they were struck by lightning around 1.30 p.m.

Balakrishnan from Thennavanur, who owned the animals and had brought them for grazing, was standing under a tree a few yards away when the incident took place, police said. Three goats which were with him escaped. The goats belonged to ‘Kodi aadu’ species and each weighed 20 to 23 kg and cost about Rs. 12,000. Dr. M.Asha, who conducted the post mortem, said there were no burns and the goats were electrocuted after passage of high voltage electricity.
