The Central Crime Branch of the city police on Wednesday arrested a 32-year-old man who posed as an IAS officer and conned job aspirants to the tune of Rs. 37 lakh. A couple that assisted him is absconding.

Daniel Raj, native of Kanyakumari, who lived in Besant Nagar, and his friend Venkatesan sent bulk SMSs offering government jobs. Those who responded to the messages were asked to pay up for a position in a government office. Kuppuswamy (52) from Krishnagiri gave the duo a sum of Rs. 21 lakh for jobs for his son and nephew.

When the men disappeared with the money, Kuppuswamy lodged a complaint with the police, said R. Ranjith Kumar, CCB inspector, job racket wing. Following a probe, Daniel Raj was held. Investigators are on the lookout for Venkatesan and his wife Lakshmi.
