Arrangements made for residents’ temporary shelter

CHENNAI: About 25 huts were damaged in a fire that broke out near Pulianthope on Thursday evening.

According to police sources, the fire occurred in a hut in Moorthinga Nagar that quickly spread to other huts . Fire tenders and water lorries were rushed to the spot.

Police and fire service personnel helped residents to move their belongings to safety.

Joint Commissioner of Police (North) S.N. Seshasai supervised the relief operations.

“Nobody was injured in the incident. We have made arrangements for their temporary shelter and food by coordinating with the Chennai Corporation and revenue officials,” he said.

The cause of fire is under investigation, the sources added.

Arrested for fraud

P. Vijayakumar of Thiruvancore Raja Vaidhya Salai in Mylapore was arrested on charges of cheating on Thursday.

According to the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Mylapore), A.G. Mourya, people from different places had lodged complaints that Vijayakumar had taken huge sums of money from various persons after promising to cure certain ailments.

However, the treatment given by him did not yield the desired results.

A case under Section 420 (Cheating) of the IPC was registered against the accused.

He was produced in a city court and remanded to judicial custody, Mr. Mourya said.
