On the charge of conspiring the murder of a youth
MADURAI: A couple was taken into custody on the charge of conspiring the murder of a 21-year-old youth in Madurai on Tuesday. Two others who executed the meticulously planned murder were also apprehended.
According to police sources, P. Duraipandi (21) of Maninagaram was in love with a girl residing at Kanagavel Colony.
The girl's parents turned down the proposal of Duraipandi to marry her. On January 29, the youth was reported to have committed suicide by consuming poison. The Thideer Nagar police registered a case of suicide.
However, the Assistant Commissioner of Police, N. Rajendran, formed a special team led by Inspector M. Udhayasuriyan to probe the circumstances under which he committed suicide.
Investigation revealed that the conspiracy to eliminate Duraipandi was hatched after efforts to make him stay away from the girl proved futile.
On the instruction of the girl's parents, M. Nagarajan (48) and N. Jayalakshmi (46), B. Sridhar alias Ramesh of Tirupuvanam and P. Muthukumar (30) of Yagappa Nagar befriended Duraipandi.
On January 29, Sridhar took him to a lodge on the West Perumal Maistry Street and offered liquor. Unaware that the drink was mixed with poison, Duraipandi consumed it. A little later, the victim fell unconscious and succumbed.
During interrogation, Sridhar confessed that he and Muthukumar were paid by the girl's parents to murder Duraipandi.
Their plan was to make the death look like suicide. Attempts were made to convince the investigating officials that the youth was in a depressed state of mind days before his death.
All the four accused were taken into custody, the sources added.
