Unidentified persons struck at the house of Pazhamalai (65), retired secretary of a cooperative bank, at Kuppankuzhi near Kattumannarkoil on Sunday night and snatched away seven-sovereign ‘thali' from his wife Lalitha.

Police sources said the burglars broke open the rear door and entered the house when Pazhamalai and Lalitha were asleep. One of the burglars snatched the jewel from Lalitha. When she raised an alarm, Pazhamalai woke up and tried to come to her rescue. But another intruder hit him with the handle of a spade, causing bleeding injuries on the head.

Even as neighbours rushed in hearing the commotion, the culprits fled. Police have registered a case.
