“Kovilpatti has produced good players”

Tuticorin: Lakshmi Ammal Memorial All India Hockey Tournament, organised by K.R. Educational Institutions, commenced here on Sunday.

V. Baskaran, Senior Sports Officer of Southern Railway and the chief guest, inaugurated the tournament at the college ground. He said that Kovilpatti played an important role in the development of hockey in India. Leading hockey players from Punjab have also played in the Kovilpatti hockey field. Renowned Indian players like Senthil, Ganesan, Radhakrishnan, Ramasamy and Jegan were natives of Kovilpatti, Mr. Baskaran added. The tournament was conducted with the help of Kovilpatti, Rajiv Gandhi Hockey Club.

Hockey teams from all over India including MEG Bangalore, Tamil Nadu Police, Thyguard Kerala, Income Tax Chennai, Port Trust Chennai, Kovilpatti Rajiv Gandhi, Kollam Magnum, Bangalore Canara Bank, SAI Bhopal, Rajesh Pillai Sports Academy Pune, Southern Railways Chennai, SAI Chennai, Rainbow IX Karnataka, Central Excise Chennai, Indian Railways Rail Wheel Factory, Indian Bank Chennai and Karnataka State Police Hockey team were expected to participate in the tournament. K.Ramasamy, Chairman, presided over the function.
