: In connection with the 65th birthday celebrations of Chief Minister Jayalalithaa, Mayor Vijila Sathyananth has made arrangements for the south India women’s hockey tournament between February 14 and 17 at Palayamkottai.

Ms. Vijila told reporters here on Saturday that 19 women’s hockey teams from Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala and Puducherry were participating in the tournament at VOC Stadium.

Tirunelveli City district secretary Sudha K. Paramasivan will preside over the inaugural ceremony of the tournament, which will be formally declared open by N.R. Sivapathi, Minister for Education.

In the valediction on February 17, Minister for Tourism S. Gokula Indra would distribute prizes to winners in the presence of Rajya Sabha MP P.H. Manoj Pandian, Ministers S.T. Chellapandian, K.T. Pachaimal and P. Senthurpandian and chairman of Tamil Nadu Housing Board R. Murugaiah Pandian.

The winners will get Chief Minister Jayalalithaa Trophy along with the cash award of Rs. 25,000 while the first and second runners-up will receive the trophies and cash awards of Rs. 15,000 and Rs. 5,000 respectively.

“Moreover, 65 outstanding sportsmen and sportswomen from the district will be honoured,” Ms. Vijila said.

Event organizers Sathyananth and Dominic Savio were present.
