CHENNAI: An employee of the State Highways Department, who allegedly cheated a scrap dealer of Rajapalayam in Virudhunagar district, was arrested along with his accomplice by the Kotturpuram police on Wednesday.

According to the police, M. Elangovan (43), the iron scrap dealer, was approached by Jayaseelan (55), who claimed to be a Divisional Engineer of the Highways Department in Chennai. Saying that he had supervised the construction of many flyovers in the city, Jayaseelan offered to deliver iron scrap worth Rs.3 crore for Rs.40 lakh.

When Mr. Elangovan sent two of his staff members to check the veracity of the offer, Jayaseelan took them around the construction sites in an official vehicle. Based on their feedback, Mr. Elangovan entered into an agreement with Jayaseelan and his associate Ramalakshmi in July, and paid an advance of Rs.30 lakh. Months passed, but the consignment was not delivered. When repeated reminders did not yield result, Mr. Elangovan lodged a complaint with Commissioner of Police T. Rajendran.

A special team formed under the supervision of Deputy Commissioner of Police (Adyar) R. Tirugnanam arrested Jayaseelan, who was actually found to be working as a Record Clerk in the Highways Department. Ramalakshmi has also been apprehended.

“A car purchased by the accused with the money taken from the complainant has been seized. The accused were produced in a city court and have been remanded to judicial custody,” Mr. Tirugnanam said.
