Highways Department bags ISO certification

The Bureau of Indian Standards has granted Quality Management Systems Certification ISO 9001 to the Coimbatore division of the State Highways Department.

The Highways Department becomes the first government department to bag the ISO 9001 certification for quality management systems in place. The divisions that bagged the certification included Coimbatore, Tiruchi, Coimbatore Rural Roads, Erode and Pudukottai.

Superintending Engineer - Coimbatore Thangamuthu, Superintending Engineer – Tiruchirapalli Sivalingam, Coimbatore Rural Roads Divisional Engineer Gowthamaraja, Erode Divisional Engineer Pugazhendi and Pudukottai Divisional Engineer Durairaj were among the officials who received the certification. The officials presented the certificates to Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi in the presence of Highways Minister M.P. Saminathan, Secretary to Government for Highways G. Santhanam and Director General of Highways Hariraj.

The certification encompasses the following operations and services of the Highways Department such as preparation, scrutiny and sanction of estimates, tendering, issue of work orders, agreement execution, review of progress and issuance of completion certificates for works relating to highways department of Government of Tamil Nadu excluding design and development activities. The certification that came into effect from August 31, 2010 will be valid till August 30, 2013.
