Higher Education Minister K. Ponmudy greeted the first batch of students joining the newly started government medical college at Mundiampakkam recently .

He gave away admission certificates to 80 students, including 44 girls and 36 boys, who were selected through counselling.

Mr. Ponmudy said the college was started against many odds, with the support of Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi and Deputy Chief Minister M.K. Stalin.

The college would have a total intake of 100 students and the remaining selected from the national quota. Of 80 students joining on Thursday, seven belonged to Villupuram district and 15 are first generation graduates. The government would pay for the education of the latter.

Collector R. Palanisamy, college principal P. Jayakumar, Villupuram Municipal Chairman R. Janakaraj, and PWD Executive Engineer Manoharan were present.
