Huge crowds gather to view the cars
The vintage cars that were on display along the Puducherry beach, as part of The Hindu Chennai-Pondy Heritage Car Rally, organised in association with the Madras Heritage Motoring Club and Puducherry Tourism, was flagged off back to Chennai by Chief Secretary R. Chandramohan on Sunday morning.
Over 40 stylish cars, representing the period between 1927 and 1975, were on display on Saturday evening drawing huge crowds belonging to different age groups. Cars of different sizes, representing a wide variety of models, showcased not only the passion of the car makers of yesteryear, but also that of their current owners who spend considerable time and money to maintain these machines.
A number of people who visited the rally recollected watching some of the cars on old Hollywood movies in the 1970s.
Ragottaman, a retired professor, said that watching cars such as the Austin and the Volkswagen made him nostalgic. “We used to wonder if we could ever see and drive such magnificent cars. Though I couldn't drive one today, I am very happy to see them for real,” he said.
A number of people also clicked pictures with their favourite cars on the rally.
The rally concluded at Mamallapuram.
