MADURAI: With the objective of creating awareness among the public of the rights of elderly people, an ‘awareness march for elders’ rights’ was organised here on Thursday by HelpAge India, an age-care organisation.
Hundreds of aged people, along with students, took part in the rally flagged off by Principal Sub-Judge and secretary of District Legal Services Authority, T. Balakrishnan. It started at Rajah Muthiah Mandram and , culminated at Gandhi Memorial Museum where a meeting was organised.
Speaking at the meeting, P.R. Anbazhakan, Deputy Director of the organisation, said that youngsters should raise funds to aid services rendered to aged people. A memorandum was also submitted to the district administration calling for extending old age pension to all eligible people. The district administration should also promote SHGs for elders. Further, below poverty line cards should be issued to eligible old people.
