Providing adequate education opportunities for the younger generation and helping them to take up income generation activities are vital for the country to achieve sustainable development, Union Minister of State for Health S. Gandhiselvan has said.

He was speaking after inaugurating the Saakshar Bharat Yatra, which was organised in collaboration with Tamil Nadu Science Forum, a unit of non-government organisation Bharat Gyan Vigyan Samiti (BGVS), here on Monday.

Mr. Gandhiselvan said more than 65 per cent of the country's population is aged below 35 years.

The Centre has come up with Saakshar Bharat scheme to improve the literacy rate and enable the younger generation to participate effectively in the nation building process. The Saakshar Bharat scheme aims to promote and strengthen the Adult Education, specially of women, by extending educational options to those adults, who have lost the opportunity of access to formal education and crossed the standard age limit.
