Helmet awareness rally taken out

To create awareness on the need for wearing helmet and to ensure road safety, police personnel from the Krishnagiri took out a motorcycle rally on Thursday.

Superintendent of Police S.R. Senthil Kumar flagged off the rally in front of the Anna statue near new bus stand in the town. The rally went through the main thoroughfares in the town.

Mr. Kumar said that people should exercise caution to prevent accidents by wearing helmets.

Slogans were raised on road safety norms, importance of wearing helmets and preserving life on roads.

In Krishnagiri district, 495 died in the road accidents and 2,429 injured and the number of cases registered were 1,995 in 2010, 464 died and 2,265 injured and 1852 cases registered in 2011, while 504 died and 2,136 injured in 1745 road accidents in 2012

Most of the deaths and severe injuries could be prevented, if motorists wear helmet, police officials added.

Later speaking to reporters, Mr. Kumar said that wearing helmet while riding would be made compulsory from April 20 in the district and action would be taken against offenders and spot fine levied.
