The sleuths of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) on Thursday nabbed 30-year-old Arafath of Ilayankudi in Sivaganga District in connection with the smuggling of electronic goods worth Rs. 1.10 crore.
It may be recalled that on May 31, 2009 the DRI sleuths found suspicious, unaccompanied baggage parcels at the Coimbatore Airport.
The unaccompanied baggage declared as “for personal use” was sent for commercial purposes.
The parcels contained electronic goods worth Rs. 30 lakh meant for Arafat currently residing at Chennai.
The baggage contained electronic goods such as video camera, digital camera, watches and music gadgets.
Investigations led to the arrest of Arafat and sleuths suspected the involvement of two more persons.
DRI sleuths said that goods meant for commercial purposes being declared as “for personal use” is an offence under the Customs Act.
He was produced before the Magistrate L.S. Sathyamoorthy (who is holding additional charge as Chief Judicial Magistrate), who remanded Arafat to judicial custody till July 22.
