A 3-member team of the Forest Department arrested three persons and seized elephant tusk weighing 2.150 kg from them on Wednesday night.

A.V. Venkatachalam, Conservator of Forests, Vellore Circle, told reporters here on Thursday that acting on a tip-off, the team made the arrests. The trio were exchanging the tusk inside a hotel at Ranipet.

Mr. Venkatachalam said: “Poaching of male tuskers will seriously affect the growth of the Asian elephant population. We are in touch with our counterparts in other districts and we hope to soon apprehend the kingpin involved in poaching and selling of tusks.”
