Accused had come out on bail in a murder case

Police on Thursday arrested Sekar alias Sengutuvan (35) of Kokarayanpettai near Pallipalayam in Tiruchengode Taluk, Namakkal District, for allegedly firing at Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) officials who were on inspection around midnight on Wednesday near Pallipalayam to check for illegal dyeing units that were polluting River Cauvery.

In a complaint lodged with Molasi Police, TNPCB District Environmental Engineer (DEE) M. Murugan and Assistant Environmental Engineer (AEE) M. Selvakumar said they found a lorry waiting to be loaded with dyed clothes at Kokarayanpettai.

When the officials seized the keys of the truck, the workers involved in dyeing clothes amid agricultural fields fled the scene. This spot was located near the river.

The officials said in the complaint that when they were preparing to leave the place with the lorry key, Sengutuvan blocked their jeep, pointed a gun at them and threatened to open fire if they did not get off the vehicle.

He did so even after they identified themselves as TNPCB officials. When the jeep driver tried to accelerate, Senguttuvan opened fire at the officials. They, however, escaped unhurt.

The officials informed District Collector D. Jagannathan and lodged the police complaint. Police said that the accused used his licensed firearm.

He was booked under Section 307 (attempt to murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Arms Act of 1959 and was remanded in judicial custody. Senguttuvan had come out on bail in a murder case recently.
