SALEM: A notorious gang of robbers involved in a series of robberies such as chain snatchings was arrested here.

Concerned over the sudden spurt in chain snatchings in the city in recent times, Commissioner of Police Sunil Kumar Singh formed a special squad under Inspector P. Kannan.

The team conducted exhaustive enquiries and traced dormant criminals to ascertain the identity of the gang, which was engaged in chain snatchings in the months of March, April and May in city limits and its suburbs.

The investigation led the police to Namakkal district from where three criminals migrated to Salem city and got involved in a series of offences.

The special team in coordination with Fairlands Police Station had arrested Rajendran (31) and Raja of Vennandur and Nandhakumar (24) of Pallipalayam in Namakkal district.

They were active in the areas of Rediyur, Hasthampatti, Ammapet, ATC Nagar, Sona Nagar, EB Colony, Fairlands, Sankar Nagar and Narasothipatti in Salem.

The police also seized 39 sovereigns of gold jewellery worth Rs. 5 lakh from the gang.
