Rs.10 lakh allotted for desilting Thellanthi tank: Collector

Nagercoil: Normal life was thrown out of gear following heavy rains, which lashed various parts of the district on Saturday.

The low lying areas were flooded with rain water particularly the passengers from Vadaserry and Anna bus stand were put to untold hardship.

However the present rain would be beneficial to the farming community, who could take up cultivation activities even before the release of water from Pechipparai dam, which was scheduled to be opened on June 8.

It has been decided to raise paddy on over 17,437 hectares, black gram and other pulses on over 664 hectares, tapioca on 6,264 hectares and banana plantation on 6,789 hectares.

Speaking to ‘The Hindu' the Collector, Rajendra Ratnoo, said that the sum of Rs.10 lakh had been allotted for the desilting of Thellanthi tank. Steps had also been taken to desilt Pattanam channel and its tributaries.

After getting the special fund, steps would be taken to desilt Chitharal channel.

The water level in Pechipparai dam stood at 24.10 feet, 27.40 feet in Perunchani, 3.78 feet in Chittar I and 3.80 feet in Chittar II.
