Following overnight rainfall, water release for irrigation from the Vaigai dam was suspended for the second time this on Wednesday night. The release was resumed only on Tuesday after two days of dry spell.
Incessant rain reported in many parts of the catchment areas and plains of the Periyar-Vaigai basin resulted in huge flow of water into the Vaigai river. The flowing water touched both the banks after a long period.
Water level in the Periyar dam on Thursday stood at 117.80 feet (full level 136 feet) with an inflow of 1,753 cusecs and a discharge of 925 cusecs. The level in the Vaigai dam was 56.17 feet (71 feet) with an inflow of 1,357 cusecs and a discharge of 41 cusecs. The combined Periyar credit stood at 3,435 mcft.
Andipatti recorded the highest rainfall of 136 mm in the region. It was followed by Marudhanadi 61, Sittampatti 55, Manjalar dam 54, Idyapatti 52, Mettupatti 51, Madurai 42, Kallandiri 33.5, Sattaiyar dam 32, Gudalur 30.5 and Peranai and Viraganoor 30 each, Veerapandi 29, Sothuparai dam 26, Periyar dam and Thaniyamangalam 22 each, Kuppanampatti 20.3, Vaigai dam 20, Tekkadi 18.3, Shanmuganadi 18, Uthamapalayam 12 and Pulipatti and Melur 5 each.
