ERODE: Dharapuram Municipal Council on Monday witnessed a heated discussion over water supply.
At a meeting presided by Chairman Subramaniam, senior DMK councillor Srinivasan went to the podium and squatted on the floor.
Mr. Srinivasan said he had been taking up water problem in his ward at the council meetings but nothing had been done to solve it. He said hereafter he would sit on the floor.
Both the Chairman and the Municipal Commissioner pacified him and promised that all efforts would be made to supply water to his ward. Mr. Srinivasan then went to his seat.
AIADMK councillors Govindaraj and Kamaraj said Dharapuram town would face severe water scarcity soon and urged the municipal administration to take precautionary steps to avert drought in the town. They said a huge amount had been spent by the Government to provide water to Dharapuram from Cauvery River, but the scheme was not functioning properly.
DMK councillior Habibulla and CPM councillor Sugumar complained that Cauvery water was not being supplied properly.
The municipal officials said they were getting 10 lakh litres of Cauvery water every day. But Sugumar said according to the Cauvery water scheme, 40 lakh litres of water should be given to Dharapuram. Habibulla suggested that water be given to Dharapuram from Tirumurthy reservoir.
The councillors also wanted the Chairman to take steps to improve the revenue of the Municipality, so that more development works could be taken up.
