Conduct surprise checks as part of State-wide drive

Action against establishments after sample test results

ERODE: Public Health Department officials destroyed adulterated tea worth Rs. 4,000 during the course of surprise checks conducted in the district as part of a State-wide operation.

Deputy Director, Erode, G. Raghunathan said three teams of officials went to tea shops, grocery stores to check for adulterated tea.

Erode team went to shops and establishments in Erode and Bhavani panchayat unions, Gobichettipalayam team went to Gobichettipalayam, Nambiyur and T.N. Palayam panchayat unions and Sathyamangalam team visited Sathyamangalam and neighbouring panchayat union areas.

The teams, Dr. Raghunathan said, visited 128 shops, lifted 12 samples to be sent to testing laboratory and destroyed adulterated tea worth Rs. 4,000.

As for the samples sent to laboratories, he said depending on the test result, the Department would initiate action against the establishment concerned under the Prevention of Food Adulteration Act.

This was the seventh raid the Department conducted this year, he said and added that earlier raids were conducted to check for quality of milk and milk products, baby foods, ice cream, packaged water, edible oil, etc.
